Physical Education (PE)

Physical Education inspires our children to participate in healthy lifestyle choices, build resilience to try new and competitive opportunities and other physically demanding challenges. Through active participation they showcase character building qualities such as respect, fairness, discipline, commitment. Our provision of sports clubs, facilities and expert teacher and coaches inculcates lifelong interests and healthy habits. Our daily mile, improving swimming results in KS2 and scheme of work in practice all demonstrate our commitment and success with PE


At Oakington Manor we intend to provide all our pupils with a broad and balanced Physical Education in which every child will have an equal chance to achieve their best.  We endeavour to create a culture of learning in which children feel secure and highly motivated to work and succeed.  We believe that P.E. can develop children's confidence and self-esteem and that every child should have equal access to develop their fine and gross motor skills, co-ordination, co-operative and creative skills in a safe environment. We plan to ensure that all pupils develop competence in a broad range of physical activities, are physically active for sustained periods of time, engage in competitive sports and activities and lead healthy, active lives. P.E. is an integral, vital and valuable part of the curriculum and to the development of the whole child now and in the future.


Curriculum Implementation:

  • Pupils participate in weekly high-quality PE and sporting activities. Our PE programme is broad and balanced to ensure all children develop the confidence, tolerance and the appreciation of their own and others’ strengths and weaknesses.
  • The PE plans provide a range of activity-based units of work that are progressive from Key Stage One upwards: fundamental movement skill units for Key Stage One, progressing into generic activity areas in Key Stage Two and then specific activity focus in higher Key Stage Two. This complements the National Curriculum programmes of study for Physical Education.
  • The units of work are supported by core tasks as a basis for assessment which aligns with our preferred assessment model
  • PE lessons are delivered by PE specialist teachers as well as class teachers to ensure high quality and continued professional development in this key curriculum area.
  • Weekly Swimming sessions for years 3,4 and 5 are delivered by the Learn to Swim Team in the Local Authority.
  • All children also complete the daily mile and/or a 5-a-day class-based activity session to help achieve the 6o minutes a day physical activity target.
  • We provide opportunities for all children to engage in extra-curricular activities in addition to competitive sporting events through our School Sport Partnership.

By the end of each key stage, pupils will know, apply and understand the matters, skills and processes specified in the relevant programme of study. Further our quality Physical Education provision will have a positive effect on pupil’s physical, social, emotional and cognitive development.

  • Physical; Pupils understand how exercise helps them to develop a healthy lifestyle, gain a broad range of skills that help them to participate in a variety of physical activities and enjoy an active lifestyle.
  • Social; Pupils get the opportunity to socialise with others and learn different skills such as communication, tolerance, trust, empathy and respect for others. They also learn positive team skills including cooperation, leadership, cohesion and responsibility. Through PE and Sport pupils experience a variety of emotions and learn how to better cope in stressful, challenging or painful situations.
  • Emotional; Physical Education improves mental health-including reduced stress, anxiety and depression. It also helps our pupils to develop strategies to manage their emotions and increases their self-esteem.
  • Cognitive; increased blood flow produced by our regular physical activity stimulates the brain and  boosts mental performance. Regular physical activity also increases energy and concentration in the classroom.
